Betty Wasswa (the teacher & founder of Rock of Ages) was led to start the school in Mbiko village because most of the children are either without parents; their mothers are prostitutes; and/or there is great despair. Rock of Ages Nursery school is a Christian founded school where these children will be taught the word of God while they are still young so that when they grow up ,they will be the role models in their society. Mbiko is also a stronghold for drugs.
If the parents are fortunate to have one of very few jobs available, the most they can hope to earn is roughly 3 dollars per month. (whether through prostitution or digging in people gardens) It is of great importance and urgency for these kids to go to school. If they do not go to school they will not have the qualifications they need to get a job and will fall into the same strongholds that exist in their village; ie. Drugs, prostitution etc.
Everyone who goes to school in Uganda; whether government school or private, must pay for their own education, uniform, books & expenses. There is no such thing as a free school. Betty, the main teacher and visionary for the school has been trained to be a high school teacher . She carries a HUGE burden for the small children in this poverty stricken village. She attended YWAM ( youth with a mission ) and has received early childhood education to receive her teaching credentials. She is currently donating her time and travel to the village because the current students attending cannot afford to pay their school fees. Betty travels 30 minutes each day by boda boda (bicycle/& taxi) to reach the school children in Mbiko.
It costs $60 per term (term=3 months); or $180 per year (you can chose to pay by term or for whole year). Your sponsorship is a tax deductible, charitable contribution! There is GREAT hope for these kids who can get an education. It is there only Hope for getting out of poverty. Teacher Betty is phenomenal. She loves these children more than just as a teacher. She believes in them and that alone can do miracles in the life of a child who has no hope and no family.
I (Syd) see great promise in the work the Lord is doing through this school! It was one of my favorite places to be while in Uganda! If I can get sponsors for these kids, they can turn an entire village around for Christ.
Despite the heartbreaking stories that each of these children carry with them,
they still have big smiles and THEY LOVE learning. They are so eager to absorb it all!
